At least three people lost their lives and two others went missing following flash floods triggered by heavy rains in the Rajgad area of Ramban district, the District Administration confirmed on Saturday.

Rescue operations are currently underway in the affected region, which has been reeling under continuous downpours and sudden flooding.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted isolated heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir till September 2, along with light to moderate showers across Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Uttarakhand over the next four days.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has scaled up relief efforts in northern India, particularly in flood-hit Jammu and Punjab. The Ministry of Defence reported that Mi-17 and Chinook helicopters conducted over 55 sorties, rescuing stranded civilians, including Army and BSF personnel, from inundated zones in Dera Baba Nanak, Pathankot, and Akhnoor. In addition, C-130 transport aircraft were deployed to swiftly move specialised NDRF teams to crisis-hit areas. In the past three days, IAF operations have rescued 215 people and delivered 7,300 kg of essential supplies.

Locally, Ramban MLA Arjun Singh Raju visited flood-affected families in lower Maitra on Friday. He announced a financial package of ₹10 lakh—half from MNREGA funds and half from his personal contribution—for constructing a protection wall to safeguard homes.

“The rains have damaged houses in lower Maitra. While we cannot fully compensate the losses, the government and administration stand with the people. We are committed to ensuring their safety,” the MLA said.
